5 Amazing Benefits of Ghee

On an episode of No Reservations, host Anthony Bourdain went to America’s desert playground. He and Michael Ruhlman, a celebrated cookbook author, wined and dined in Las Vegas’s finest establishments. One of these celebrated foodie joints were Bouchon, one of Thomas Keller’s signature restaurants. If you don’t know him, perhaps French Laundry might ring a bell.

In any case, the two started talking about India. The topic of ghee came about. Bourdain told him that Indians incinerate the dead with it, to which Ruhlman replied, “Well I guess that’s where I’m going to die.” 

Needless to say, ghee is pretty damn amazing. Not only does it taste good, but it’s also good for you. More and more research is coming out with the benefits of what my people like to call, “liquid gold.”

Ghee is primarily made from cow’s milk. It’s made by melting butter. The butter separates into liquid fats and milk solids. The separated milk solids are removed, thereby leaving the liquid fats. The liquidy fatty goodness = ghee! This process makes ghee richer in fat, with less water content and virtually no lactose. 

The Benefits

1. High Smoke Point

Ghee has a high smoke point meaning you can cook it at high temperatures without burning it. It retains its structural integrity even close to 500 degrees.  Many oils, like olive, canola, soybean, or safflower, don’t carry the same clout because at high temperatures they can burn. When oils are heated beyond their smoke points, they release trans fatty acids as well has harmful carcinogenic, free radicals. PLUS, ghee just tastes so much better!

2.  Lactose Free

If you’re lactose intolerant then ghee might serve as an excellent alternative to butter. During the ghee making process, the majority of lactose is carried away with the milk solids when it’s separated from the liquid fats. Say goodbye to stomach aches, bloating, and any other irritable bowel issues you may have. 

3. It’s help you do the splits!

Okay, not really, but it does help lubricate the connective tissue in the body which helps promote flexibility! Think copious amounts of WD40 on the axels of a 1960’s Plymouth Fury, if you catch my drift. Many yoga and Ayurvedic practitioners attribute joint health to ghee!

4. Heart Healthy 

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has gotten lots of attention in the past decade for it’s weight loss properties, and for good reason too! A group study of overweight women showed an average decrease of 9% in body fat over the course of a year without a change in lifestyle habits. Now how’s that for weight loss! Not only does ghee help decrease weight, but also fight against heart disease and protects the body against carcinogens, plaque in the arteries, and diabetes. Our own experimentation with ghee has been positive and one that has empowered our own health, helped us shed pounds, and has aided in digestion. Don’t believe me, check out number 5 below!

5. Frequent Bowel Movements

It might be a tough topic to talk about or even contemplate, but it’s important, especially if you’re getting older. Face it, not having a daily bowl movement wrecks havoc on the body. Not to fear, because ghee may be the solution! According to author of, “The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies,” Dr. Vasant Lad urges people to take 1-2 teaspoonfuls of ghee in a cup of hot milk before bedtime as an effective means to cure constipation. We tried it in our coffee (minus the milk) and noticed the effects a couple hours later. Who doesn’t love a healthy bowel movement?
